Nose Job Procedure
Cosmetic nose jobs are also known
as rhinoplasty. The procedure can reduce or increase the size of the nose,
narrow the span of the nostrils, change the angle between the nose and
upper lip, and/or change the tip or bridge of the nose. Nose jobs can
also correct some breathing problems. Rhinoplasty involves the resculpting
of the bone and cartilage. When operating on the nose, the surgeon can
either work from within the nose by making an incision inside the nose,
or work from the outside by making a small incision across the tissue
that separates the nostrils. The latter is known as an "open"
procedure. Many nose job surgeons prefer not to perform cosmetic nose
surgery until the growth of the nasal bone is completed. In other cases,
nose job surgery may be needed for medical purposes. For example, nose
job surgery may be needed to treat a serious breathing problem or an injury.
Age may be less of a factor. Rhinoplasty can be performed under local
or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and the
patient's preference. It may be performed in a surgeon's office-based
facility, a hospital, or an outpatient surgery center. Complex nose job
procedures may require a short inpatient stay. The procedure usually takes
an hour or two, but may take longer.
